Acid Base Preschool Theme

Acid base preschool theme are fun although the concepts of acid and base are not easy for kids to grasp. Your kids might not understand or care about acid and base, even if you explain it to them. I got the impression that my son understands it a little bit, although I'm not sure how much.

Words to learn :
acid, baking-soda, base, bubbles, mix, vinegar, volcano

Rising raisin

This is from Mudpies to Magnets ,by Williams, Rockwell and Sherwood

  • I put vinegar and water in a clear container
  • add a couple of raisins
  • and then add baking soda
Whuuzzz !!! Bubbles everywhere and the raisins start 'dancing'. Fun ! Fun ! Fun ! Now Don asks me to do 'bubbles' everytime he wants to do this experiment.

Volcano

Adapted from the above Rising Raisin.

  • I made a 'volcano' from pizza box (or any thick carton will do)
  • cut a whole at the top
  • In a small container, I mixed the vinegar and baking soda, plus a little red food coloring
  • I put the container inside the volcano, at the very top. So the overflowing 'bubbles' becomes the lava of the volcano
